Description

This image is a scene of the exorcism of Nicole Obry at the Cathedral of Loan in 1566. Nicole Obry was a teenage female demoniac publicly exorcised in France in the sixteenth century. Proponents of the Counter-Reformation benefited from these events and made print publications for propaganda. In the foreground Obry is being carried in a procession into the cathedral, while in the center a crowd gathers below an improvised stage to witness different scenes of the exorcism. This image is the largest example of the audience in attendance to witness the exorcism. Near the top the exorcized demons are departing. These demons are small humanoid figures.
