French exorcists used the Eucharist in exorcisms as part of a Huguenots to prove that Christ was really present in the Eucharist and that the Catholic Church was the one true Church established by Christ. The use of the Eucharist typically excelerated the dramatics of visible symptoms and was initiated into formal Catholic ritual with Paul VÍs Rituale Romanum 1614 that standardized the ritual of exorcism. Pre-Rituale Romanum, most exorcism, either Catholic or Protestant, were ad-libbed. In the Catholic context, both the Eucharist and exorcism were considered to be miracles, and proof of the ChristÍs power over the Devil and the authenticity of Catholicism. Two men hold up Obry on either side while the Priest administers the sacrament. They represent the audience though these image significantly fewer witnesses.
