Mark 1:23 Dutch Bible Illustration
Subject
Biblical Possession
Description
The eighteenth-century Dutch artist Gerard Hoet illustrates a biblical possession of Mark 1:23 in which Christ expels an unclean spirit. The male demoniac is seen on one knee in the foreground of the illustration. He is being restrained by two male figures. The demoniac's mouth is open as if howling in agony. His head is thrown back unnaturally and his muscles are bulging from his body. The crowd represented in the background observe, some point to the horrific scene. The scene occurs in front of the synagogue at Capernaum. Christ performs this exorcism at the beginning of his public ministry. The engraving was included in a Dutch Bible. The image comes from Brian Levack's book The Devil Within: Possession and Exorcism in the Christian West.
