This thirteenth-century manuscript illustration depicts a biblical possession of the demon as a man with wings who is addressing Christ. The image was intended to represent the exorcism at Capernaum, (similar to Gerard Hoets illustration) in which the demon asked Christ, ïWhat have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?Í The image is available online from The Walters Art Museum from the Early Christian and Byzantine Art at the Baltimore Museum of Art. T'oros Roslin, a Turkish Armenian active from 1256-1268. The manuscripts place of origin is Hromklay in Gaziantp, Turkey. Its accession number is W.539.134R This image is ink and pigment on parchment of medium weight, well finished but worn from use. In the scene a demon emerges from a male demoniac, the demon is represented as a humanoid creature with wings. A crowd is also represented in the small space as many shoulders, necks, and heads emerging from a single frontal body. This image comes from The Devil Within: Possession and Exorcism in the Christian West by Brian P. Levack.
