Title
Christ Healing the Man Possessed with Devils
Subject
Biblical Possession
Description
This image illustrates the Biblical story of "The Healing of the Gadarene Demoniacs." In story two demoniacs approach Christ and during the exorcism Christ sends the demons into a herd of pigs and the pigs then rushed down a steep bank into the sea and drowned. The pigs are represented in the background of this image. One demoniac can be seen in the foreground writhing in physical pain, with his body wrenched backwards in an unnatural contortion. The demoniac is represented with swollen muscles and on his visible ankle is a chain link suggesting he was previously bound. Small, black-winged demons escape his mouth in a cloud.
