Description

This image comes from Hilaire Kallendorf's Exorcism and Its Texts: Subjectivity in Early Modern Literature of England and Spain. This image was created by an anonymous artist from the Matches, in the fifteenth century. Kallendorf printed this image by permission of il Ministero per I Beni e le Attivitö Culturale della Marche-Urbino. In the scene a saintly figure, possibly Christ, identified by a halo is holding the hand of a female demoniac while he performs an exorcism. The young woman is moderately docile while a humanoid, winged demon with claws is shown exiting her mouth and putting one foot on her head. A significant crowd has gathered to watch the scene including a crowned figure who watches from a throne. The audience remains prayerfully reserved.
