Description
Saint Hugh of Lincoln exorcises a male demoniac possessed by the Devil, created by Gherardo Sternina, (1404-1407). This fifteenth century image is held in the Museo Poldi Pezzoli. The male demoniac has been restrained by rope at the wrists and ankles and he turns his arms and face up towards heaven in prayerful lament. A priest presides over his exorcism while an altar boy and other clergy are in attendance and well a crowd of audience members on the left of the painting and surrounding the demoniac. A small winged demon with the back end of a goat flies from the scene above the buildings.
